Natalie Kucken is one of the most promising young photographers at the moment. She’s a personal friend of mine, and here’s a few questions I had for her:
What inspires you to take photos?
‘i take photographs to tell a story, i’m mostly inspired by a longing to make another world or something like that- so that’s what i try to do, create another little world within this one.’
At what age did you begin taking photographs?
‘i got into photography by completing a project where i created an image every day for a year when i was fourteen (i am seventeen now), which was an impulse decision and at first just a way to document my life and growing up and changing, but soon progressed to a love for portraiture and i quickly developed a style and a following.’
Who has influenced your photography the most?
‘this is difficult, i think that all of the people that supported my work- especially in the beginning when i had no idea what i was doing- influenced me the most, not in a way that it effected what it was that i was creating, but it was that they encouraged me to continue- and now i am where i am, and will continue to grow.’
What does photography mean to you?
‘it means a way to stay sane, a way to make beautiful things, to keep a fleeting moment or memory and a way to support myself in the future, so i can keep exploring and capturing.’
